And onto the foreground

The remaining areas to address on my layout include the sections between the track and the edge of the layout - most of which are sections through the gorge between the Rockport tunnel entrance and the railroad bridge at White Haven, and the mercantile district of White Haven. I'm going to do White Haven last.

A lot of the scenery in the foreground is going to get a good dose of static grass, so until some of that material gets here, I'm looking at some other big pieces that I need to put in to support my anticipated scenery. The biggest of these will do two things - 1) close off the view to the storage level of the layout, and 2) support the construction of some foreground mountains.

There is a section of the layout, in fact, it was the first scenery I put in place back in 2013. There are mountains closest to the background, and then the scenery dives down to simulate the bottom of the gorge, and comes back up to the track level.

I built this feature because I wanted one are of the layout to show what it would have been like to be inside of the gorge. So, there are mountains to the right and left of the track there. In order to support the mountain scenery, I needed to provide some structure at the near edge of the layout.

Bought some Masonite this afternoon and laid out a piece to cover direct viewing access to the storage level between the bridge and the duckunder.

I also built a removable panel to the left of this area to access the turnout just underneath the breaker at the entrance to the storage level.

It'll be a while until I get to scenic this area, but I wanted to tackle this before I started laying in a lot of foreground scenery. I hope to show some progress in this same area soon with a goal of getting everything but the foreground of White Haven done in 2025.

Because I was getting plaster cloth out to work on the adjacent foreground section, I figured I'd just knock out the cardboard strip frame for the mountains on the foreground side of the layout where I'd installed the Masonite. Each cardboard joint was secured with hot glue.
